Vibe Coding Is Bad News For Good Ideas

There's something about reckless “AI” use, and vibe coding in particular, that's bothered me for reasons I've never quite been able to put my finger on until now. Indulge me as I rant about our total disregard for constraints and the good ideas that come from them.

Remember when you were a #teenager and you had really good #ideas, or really big #feelings, and #adults just dismissed you because you were "too young"?

That’s #ageism. We treat #young #people like they’re not fully #human yet, which is how we justify #controlling them, #policing them, and ignoring their real #needs.

What if we actually listened to young people? What if they had a real #vote in their #schools and their #communities? They’re the ones inheriting this mess; they deserve a say.

I always try to make a #point to #include #action (especially #DirectAction) items in my #posts, #essays, and #zines. I want the #people who #read them to #DoSomething with the #knowledge and #ideas I #share.

Teaching Writing with Generative AI

This post is based on a presentation I ran recently at the AATE conference. It takes the writing cycle approach from our book 'Practical Writing Strategies' and applies Generative AI at various stages. One of the most pressing concerns at the recent Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) conference was the implications of Generative AI for teachers. There were multiple panels and sessions on the topic, ranging from discussions of AI Ethics to practical considerations for […]

Good ideas: When to use GenAI for brainstorming

Applying Generative AI like ChatGPT and Copilot to brainstorming is one of the most touted uses, and there are plenty of situations where the technology is well-suited to idea generation. At the same time, it's not always a great idea to offload the creative process to GenAI. In this post, I'll explore a few different ways to use AI for idea generation, and also suggest when it might be best to do things the old fashioned way. Why might it be better to avoid AI? If you're in a social media […]

WRITER FUEL: Just two decades after astronomers discovered the first exoplanet, NASA has confirmed the existence of 6,000 alien worlds. The total will rise even quicker as next-generation telescopes take flight.

The AI Assessment Scale: From no AI to full AI

AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT have kicked the hornet's nest in education. From articles declaring the "end of everything" (writing, the English classroom, the entire education system...) to claims that AI will revolutionise education, we've seen the full spectrum of hype. What we're yet to see much of, however, are practical solutions for dealing with these new technologies. I'm a PhD student, studying AI in education. I'm also a former secondary school teacher, Director of Learning and […]

I had the idea this morning that I kinda want 'programmable' playlists (I wanted to say 'algorithmic', but that's been used already).

So things like:

  • Play this song first:
  • Take up to 20min from this playlist
  • Play this song last

And you can go quite deep with this etc...

Super niche lmao, but often when I do workouts etc I have to arrange my playlists manually to not have them be the same all the time, but I still need my marker songs for the start/end for example.
