"Over the past year, images of masked, heavily armed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arresting men, women and children – outside of courts, at schools and homes – have become common across the United States.

"The video of an ICE agent shooting and killing Renee Nicole Good – a U.S. citizen – in Minnesota on Jan. 7, 2026, is one example of the brazen, sometimes deadly tactics that the agency employs.

"Part of the reason why recent ICE tactics have shocked Americans is because most people haven’t seen them before. Historically, the country’s militarized immigration enforcement practices have played out closer to the U.S.-Mexico border. And for decades, agents with Customs and Border Protection have carried out most deportations near the border, not ICE."

ICE immigration tactics are shocking more Americans as US-Mexico border operations move north

Militarized immigration enforcement used to be confined to near the US-Mexico border, far away from most Americans’ front lawns.

How to Stop ICE

Today on TAP: With another government funding deadline looming, congressional Democrats can at least partly curtail Trump’s thugs.

by Harold Meyerson, January 13, 2026

ICE has frequently been labeled as America’s own Gestapo, but that’s not the only historical antecedent that we should invoke. It’s also, I would submit, a resurrection of the Klan, but this time with de jure, as opposed to de facto, state power.

In its second flourishing—roughly 1915 through 1929—the Klan expanded to Northern states and directed its violence and threats of violence against not just Blacks but also Catholics and Jews, all of whom they saw as threatening the white Protestant essence of the United States. They were the tip of the nativist spear, which in 1924 led Congress to restrict immigration to the overwhelmingly white Protestant nations of northwest Europe.

More from Harold Meyerson

The ads that the Trump administration is running to bolster recruitment to ICE’s ranks are pitched to white nationalists. One borrows the lyrics of a white nationalist ballad, which promise that “We’ll have our home again” if only we can restore it to its pre-immigrant purity. One social media posting shows a classic car parked on a beach, under the words “America After 100 Million Deportations.” In this case, the mythic past that fascism always invokes is that of the Beach Boys circa 1964—white teens on white beaches.

Getting to 100 million, of course, means it’s not just immigrants but most of non-MAGA America that stands athwart our recapturing of white hegemony. By that standard, the killing of Renee Good was, if not exactly official policy, at least well within the administration’s meta-policy (i.e., conforming to Stephen Miller’s hatreds).

So how can we stop the violent maraudings of our 21st-century Klan? At the state level, some Democratic legislators have introduced legislation that would at least ban state police agencies from hiring ICE employees and former employees. At the congressional level, another federal spending authorization to keep the government open will come before Congress later this month; in theory, at least, the government will have to shutter most of its doors again on January 30. Could the Democrats refuse to pass it unless it defunded ICE?

Not in the House, of course, since the Republicans hold a small majority sufficient to prevail over any Democratic modifications. But it requires only 41 of the Senate’s 47 Democrats to keep a bill from clearing the Senate’s 60-vote cloture threshold.

The American Prospect

Important to note, many communities across the country are seeing a surge in ICE+CBP activity.

Notably new ICE tactics being talked about in West Virginia where ICE is working with local and state cops to setup at what look like DUI check points only to harass people about their status.

There's also rumors of ICE using toll booths in WVa to check plates to search for vulnerable people to target quite literally down the road.

Tackles, projectiles and gunfire: Many fear ICE tactics are growing more violent

There are countless videos on social media showing similar scenes. One, filmed by a photographer in Hyattsville, Md., shows a man pinned to the ground by two ICE officers. He pleads in Spanish and English for someone to help him.

During the incident, one of the officers drops his gun and fumbles for it. Then, he appears to point it at bystanders. Emily Covington, an assistant director in ICE’s Office of Public Affairs, told NPR in a statement that drawing a weapon can be used as a de-escalation tactic.

Another video, from Broadview, Ill., near Chicago, appears to show a man outside an ICE facility getting shot in the head with a pepper ball, a projectile filled with chemical irritants. That man, Pastor David Black, has sued the Trump administration.

Late last month, a local CBS reporter said a masked ICE agent fired a pepper ball at her car at that same facility, causing her to vomit for hours. The reporter, Asal Rezaei, said there was no protest happening at the time. Broadview Police are now investigating.

“These are just the tip of the iceberg,” says Fred Tsao, senior policy counsel at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. “People being tackled, people getting pepper sprayed or tear gassed. We’ve seen people getting threatened. And we’ve seen at least two incidents involving gunfire.”

A majority of Americans do not approve of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics, according to a recent survey from The New York Times and Siena University. Yet in Chicago, immigrant advocate groups say federal immigration officers are escalating those tactics and becoming more violent.

Sloppy messy idea so far, but something like this

Ok, USA ICE tactics. I suggest they establish a method of delivering messages, countdown, that someone has to report to a live-broadcast streaming video facility for surrender.

Messages delivered 10 days, 7 days, 5 days, 2 days.

Offer $200 bonus if appearing before 3 days to deadline.

Alternate is to self-deport before the deadline.

Offer like 10 regional facilities, and your choice of any one. Allow people to record and witness these surrenders.

THE MAIN POINT: Get out of the business of armed entry / "swat style raids" into workplaces and homes unless a person has gone 14 days beyond the deadline date.

At 3 day countdown, post their name and identity in public so the whole society can notify them to self-surrender.

PROBLEM: Stop treating immigrants like dangerous armed criminals. I think that's the heart of the problem. Daily raids to make headlines has ruined the USA reputation on the world stage.

PROBLEM: I think everyday USA population is worried about getting caught in crossfire with these aggressive "swat style" raids. Too many people are being ENTERTAINED by the spectacle of this. There is a social atmosphere of Reality TV COPS (Fox Network) show, drama, hate for entertainment. "Teaching a lesson" is teaching badness itself.

--------------

And all these systems should start to have people actively ASSISTING and HELPING people here in USA illegally through third-party support groups, people helping people, and a better attitude of honesty and goodness as opposed to oppression and persecution that ICE and society is flocking towards.

People should be developing prevention methods, helping people, not get into illegal immigrant status.
