I've confirmed the story, and it was a brew pub in the Bayside neighborhood. Hubby saw the video but couldn't make out the name of the brew pub, but recognized the neighborhood. "Cooper George was doing what other 13-year-old boys do when they’re home alone: he played video games.
Then, his friend texted in a group chat saying Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity was ramping up.
It was Jan. 12, a week before a surge that federal agents have dubbed 'Operation Catch of the Day' began in Maine.
George knew that ICE officers had been scoping out some places near his home in Westbrook. But if they were increasing their operations, did that mean they were going door to door? Were they going to come to his house?
He immediately stepped away from his screen and rummaged through his bag to look for his passport.
George has been carrying proof of his U.S. citizenship, like his passport or birth certificate, for about a year now, ever since he heard about ICE agents showing up in schools last spring.
He’s afraid he could be arrested because he’s mixed race. He’d seen news reports in other states of other U.S. citizens of color who said they had been stopped or detained by immigration officers.
Since President Donald Trump retook office and announced plans to crack down on illegal immigration, people of color have said they anticipate being stopped by federal agents.
A Supreme Court ruling in September cleared the way for immigration agents to stop people based on their race, language, job or location.
Federal officials say they’ve arrested more than 200 people so far in Maine and contend that they’re focused on detaining people with criminal records and illegal immigration statuses.
But family members, immigrant advocates and local officials have said that many of those detained so far are either in the country legally or haven’t committed any crimes.
Some citizens, like George, have started carrying proof of citizenship on them in an effort to prevent arrest if they are approached.
But this one afternoon, he couldn’t find his passport."

"Small demonstrations have been held throughout the week — in Portland and beyond — but Friday night’s appeared to be the first to attract such numbers since U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement began a large-scale operation this week.
" 'No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here,' protesters chanted as a symphony of car horns blared on Congress Street shortly after the protest began at 5 p.m.
"Protesters began marching down Congress Street around 6 p.m., chanting 'No justice, no peace, get ICE off our streets; to the steady beat of drums."

Did some patrolling around #PortlandME today. Lots of business have Anti-ICE signs which state that they consider them trespassers and will call the local police. Good! I had my phone and whistle, but didn't see any masked asshats. Had a nice chat with an unhoused fella who hangs out near the bar that I DJ at (and I slipped some money to him after our chat). A lot of the regulars know me, and know that I always have an ear to hear their stories, even if I don't always remember to carry cash for them. Anyhow, the streets were unusually empty -- especially empty of POC. I don't like that my former stomping grounds is being terrorized. And #JaredGolden giving more money to these terrorists (naively thinking they can be reined in) is beyond disgusting! I didn't see anyone out protesting (I know there was a rally planned for 5pm), so I decided to head home before the snow squalls blew in (they started just as I got home). Kudos to the hearty souls who are out there braving the cold tonight -- whether they are protesting, homeless, or just trying to earn a living under a #FascistRegime -- my heart goes out to them!

"On a residential street in Portland's Parkside neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, several residents honked car horns and blew #whistles and #airhorns as several ICE agents get into unmarked vehicles and pull off down the block.
"It was unclear if the agents had arrested anyone.
"A woman who gave her name only as Olivia said she lives nearby, and responded when she heard that ICE agents were in the area.
" 'Came out, walked around, found them. There are a lot of other folks out here with whistles and bull horns trying to alert folks,' she said.
"Olivia said she witnessed an immigration arrest earlier that day just up the block."

Cassandra Linton, who runs a company that supports adults with disabilities, said one of the people arrested on the first day of the surge was an employee. She said she's concerned about what would happen to her clients, some of whom are nonverbal, should their caregiver be arrested while they're out in public.

"Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce says ICE officials are telling one story about their operation to arrest 'the worst of the worst' in Maine, but the reality on the ground is entirely different.
"During a press conference Thursday, Joyce confirmed that ICE agents arrested a corrections officer recruit who he described as 'squeaky clean.'
"Joyce declined to name the officer, but he said he underwent a rigorous vetting process, including a background check, before he was hired last year. He said he had no criminal record, was following the rules, and had permission to work in Maine through the spring of 2029.
" 'I guess if you're not a card carrying US citizen, then you must be illegal,' Joyce said. 'Because that's what they told me, is he's illegal. And he's definitely not a criminal. So what part of him is illegal? I don't know.'
"Joyce said roughly a half dozen ICE agents arrested the officer Wednesday night and left his running car unattended on a city street in Portland. He described the arrest as 'bush league' and said law enforcement officers would first need probable cause to make an arrest and would never abandon a vehicle in that way."
