In reviewing his situation, U.S. District Judge Irene Berger said there has been no evidence that Rodriguez has a history of violence or serious criminal convictions, that he poses a risk of not cooperating with the immigration system, that he is a danger to the community or that he has ever been involved in gang activitThen the judge’s assessment took a twist. Berger noted that federal authorities had attached documentation of a 2009 conviction for marijuana possession.

That did not add up, the judge wrote. “The Petitioner,” she wrote, meaning Rodriguez, “was four years old in 2009.”

“It’s just been insane,” Gividen, who served as deputy chief counsel for ICE between 2016 and 2019 before starting his own private practice, explained. “I’m going into federal court to get a federal judge to tell ICE and the immigration judge that they have to play by the rules.”

Noem defends her portrayal of killed Minneapolis protesters as agitators

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has defended her agency in testimony and under questioning at a Senate hearing. She appeared before the Judiciary Committee on Tuesday as a backlash grows over deadly immigration enforcement actions tied to President Donald Trump's deportation push. It was her first congressional hearing since two protesters were killed in Minneapolis by Homeland Security officers in January. Noem's department sent hundreds of officers to Minnesota. Protesters marched and tracked enforcement activity. An ICE officer shot Renee Good. Border Protection officers shot Alex Pretti. The deaths led to demands for accountability. At the hearing, Noem blamed “violent protesters” for contributing to the chaos officers encountered.

Trump agreed to release Columbia student detained by ICE, Mamdani says

Federal immigration agents have detained a Columbia University student in her campus apartment. But hours after she was taken into custody on Thursday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said President Donald Trump had agreed to release her immediately. The agreement followed an unrelated meeting between the Democratic mayor and Republican president. Attorneys for the student said ICE agents had entered her campus apartment under the guise of searching for a missing person. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said the woman's visa was terminated in 2016 for failing to attend class. Her attorneys didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
