🎙️Sam Lenci added “Policy starts the process” of recognising Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being and that “It doesn’t have to be a class about Indigeneity; it’s about the students and their wellbeing.”

More Day 1 #ICDEWC30:
🎙️ On Project Nexus and “Cosmogogy” collaborative learning: “It’s learning *with* the world, not just about it” — Julie Lindsay
🎙️ On leveraging storytelling AI to preserve Indigenous culture: “AI should strengthen reciprocity, voice and belonging” — Janet Bruce-Brand

AI does ask questions and forces us to change practices where “content” has become a substitute and or representation of either learning or teaching.

So yes a change agent, and in someways positive as it gets us to start thinking beyond essays and papers, but beyond that?

It doesn’t address equity, it reinforces it.
It doesn’t address funding, it siphons it away.
It doesn’t empower diversity, it white washes it.

I am trying to understand the AI in education conversation - but I’m not really getting it.

The conversation treats AI as a thing that doesn’t exist. There are popular LLMs and niche automations - but nothing more than that.

AI at the moment consists of “content” - which is neither teaching or learning. Nor is it connection, collaboration or cooperation. So what does it *add* to education?

Day 1 #ICDEWC30 quotes:
- On the importance of contextually relevant design, “training material adapted to local needs improves communication, trust and collaboration” — Diane Hockridge
- On AISLA chatbot, “builds critical thinking and *how* to think” — David Rose

Faryal Khan presenting just how poorly we are addressing the UN SDGs - it’s 2025 and 2030 is not that far away.

And here we are talking about AI - which doesn’t address and only contributes to dragging back any gains we might have made when it comes to climate and energy. #ICDEWC2025

How good are conferences to reconnect, meet and grow the network? Have met many new people, connected with those I’ve only known by a handle or postage stamp on a video conference, and reconnected with people who I haven’t seen in a decade.

So good to convene and commune with folks from around the world. And Wellington with the sun out and the wind down to low is spectacular.

More #ICDEWC30 opening plenary quotes:
- On convening in person after two years: “There is no artificial intelligence in the rich human knowledge that surrounds you.” — Mark Nichols
- On inclusion and creating opportunities for marginalised students: “Writing the cheque isn’t what did it for her, making her feel like she mattered is.” — Paul LeBlanc

Stunning #ICDEWC30 open 😍 “we’re gathered by what binds us: a shared belief in the transformative power of education” Giselle Byrnes. And a throwback to adrienne maree brown’s #OpenEd25 keynote: “we are here to imagine together, to ask ‘what if?”
