This week, our Product Lead, Uche Edwin, spoke at the 5th International Conference on AI & Robotics, joining a panel on AI Infrastructure and Startup Innovation: Building Scalable Pathways to Business Growth in Africa held at University of Lagos
The conversation dug into what it really takes to build an environment where Africa doesn’t just use technology but creates it. Key points included:
• Making compute resources more available for researchers in both academia and industry
• Expanding shared data infrastructure — including DSN’s 3,000 hours of voice data from the African Voices Project (funded by the Gates Foundation)
• Encouraging experimentation within universities, highlighted by the new UNDP Innovation Pod at UNILAG
• Strengthening collaboration across the ecosystem, with the Nigeria AI Collective positioned as a key platform
In short, the future of AI in Africa depends on shared resources, shared knowledge, and shared ambition.
