@stuartl @qqmrichter I don't get the tone towards free/libre software devs - they don't get to choose the standards corporates present to users as a fait accompli.

Bluetooth and its Linux stack seems bad enough that a distro (Hyperbola) announced they have ripped it out - millions of lines of code, apparently.

BTW, Hyperbola sounds very off-beat. They don't want PHP or Rust or Chromium, they even want to rebuild on top of the OpenBSD kernel.

Have you checkout about Hyperbola GNU/Linux-Libre project?
They say that they want "implementing a completely new OS derived from several BSD...

...This will not be a "distro", but a hard fork of the OpenBSD kernel and userspace including new code written under GPLv3 and LGPLv3 to replace GPL-incompatible parts and non-free ones."

The project was called as "HyperbolaBSD"

Unlike other #BSD systems, HyperbolaBSD will be developed under #GNU #GPL licenses and compatible ones, with a modularized design like the GNU/Linux operating system. Linux is slowly becoming bloat and adding questionable things.

I've been trying out #FreeBSD and other BSDs. So far it has been great. I've found most of the things I need there.

Also, curiously waiting to try out #HyperbolaBSD when it comes out in 2022 (or perhaps 2023?)

What is there to complain, unless #HyperbolaBSD developers make fixes (not changes) in shared code #GPL-licensed instead of offering it #BSD-licensed to upstream?

Comment: Their only difference seems to be "freedom", but forcing code changes to be GPL'ed gives user/developer less freedom.

Separate #user and #developer. Developers definitely have more freedom under BSD. The free/libre postulate is that the GPL is better for user #freedom: guaranteed freedom to vet the code.

(I neither use #Hyperbola #Linux nor contribute to #HyperbolaBSD).

Comment: HyperbolaBSD GPL'ed code reduces freedom, won't make it back to #OpenBSD.

What? They only want to rewrite ~20% of OpenBSD code, which isn't under 3-clause #BSD. OpenDSD won't need that code, because it already has the incumbent code. As for other code like #filesystems, OpenBSD won't need it either.
