The Wow! Signal Deciphered. It Was Hydrogen All Along.

The mysterious Wow! Signal shocked astronomers when it was detected in 1977. Scientists may have finally figure out what it was.

Our colleagues even recorded a video of the process, and the reasons for this, including VLBI!

ALMA Hydrogen Maser Replacement

Vimeo

Brains have the alpha waves, computers have their clocks... and radio telescopes have hydrogen masers (essentially, radio-wavelength lasers) to keep both accurate timing and frequency, which are essential for radio inteferometers such as ALMA to work.

This masers live at 5000 m high at the Chajnator plateau, so the work itself is challenging!

ALMA Gets a New Heartbeat | ALMA

A 'heart transplant' has just been conducted at 5.000 meters above sea level in the Chajnantor Plateau: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has successfully installed a new hydrogen maser, which has been operational since January 2024. Funded by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), an ALMA partner on behalf of North America, this upgrade...
