My wife's passion project, advocating for human composting, is hitting the big time this week after an article in the Sun-Herald on the weekend.

Her phone has been ringing off the hook with various media looking for more and she's been on local radio and now on the ABC.

I'm very excited for her and proud of her.

Largest ‘human composting’ facility in the country aims to return our bodies to nature when we die

Ashes to ashes, corpse to #compost: #GreenWoodCemetery to offer ‘human composting’ starting in 2027

By Kirstyn Brendlen

"In pursuit of a more eco-friendly future, Green-Wood #Cemetery is going back to basics.

"Starting next year, the storied cemetery will offer a new burial option: 'natural organic reduction,' also known as human composting.

"The process is fairly similar to run-of-the-mill composting. Bodies are sealed in specialized 'pods' on a bed of hay, straw and alfalfa. The pods — designed to regulate moisture and airflow — rock gently back and forth to help speed decomposition.

"After just 40 days, the contents of the pod break down into roughly 160 pounds of nutrient-dense soil, which will be used to support Green-Wood’s many plants and trees. "

Ashes to ashes, corpse to compost: Green-Wood Cemetery to offer ‘human composting’ starting in 2027

Starting next year, the storied cemetery will offer a new burial option: “natural organic reduction,” also known as human composting.

Composting for me, please. I’d rather this body be consumed by tiny living beings than dissolved in napisan. Standard burial or cremation? No thanks.

I wonder what has to happen for this to become legal in Australia.

Would like to hear your thoughts, esp those of my #neurodivergent pals.

Human composting, natural burials, water cremation: greener ways to go when you die

Burial and cremation come with some pretty major environmental problems. Both involve huge amounts of energy, resources and pollution.

Fancy being placed in a sealed metal vessel when you're dead with straw, wood chips and alfalfa and rotated for thirty days?

Your body will decompose and non-organic material will be purged.

Decomposition will continue for another month until you become nutrient-rich soil to be returned to the earth to nurture new plant life.

That's what advocates of human composting are proposing in NSW.

They want the practice of turning bodies to soil to be a "meaningful deathcare option" on par with burials or cremation.

Human Composting, also known as Terramation or Natural Organic Reduction (NOR), is currently legal in 13 states in the USA and also in Germany.

A petition to the NSW parliament to recognise, legislate and regulate the practice has accumulated more than 500 signatures since it was launched in August 2025.

One of the lead advocates, Blue Mountains resident Jude Warren, told ACM the practice "offers a meaningful way for individuals to leave a living legacy of environmental regeneration."

Ms Warren said it is carbon neutral.

"Cremation is heavy on fossil fuels, and burial space is limited and expensive, with many toxins leaking into the ground - neither offers environmental death care solutions," she said.

Ms Warren, an end-of-life nurse, admits the practice isn't for everyone.

"We understand that there are certain cultures that believe and value the wish for burial," she said.

"There is an alternative to traditional burial - with a natural burial process, which recognises and combines conserved land and the natural burial process."

In Australia, the only conserved land burial site to date is Walawaani Way Conservation Burial site in Eurobodalla on the NSW South Coast, which is set to open at the end of the year.

A Cemeteries & Crematoria NSW spokesperson told ACM "the NSW Government recognises the need for more land for cemeteries to meet future burial needs, particularly in Greater Sydney".

"Certain faith communities will run out of dedicated burial space in central Sydney within the next two years," the spokesperson said.

"The government understands that composting is an emerging technology in this space, but it is not a legal option in NSW."

#HumanComposting sounds beautiful. Becoming part of the garden you loved, or the gardens of loved ones, feels right.

#CaitlinDoughty of #AskAMortician has a very informative video on it.

Holy crap, Georgia just legalized NOR ("natural organic reduction" aka human composting)! I never would have had that on my 2025 bingo card. I fully expected the Southern states to do it dead last.

(Pun wasn't originally intended, but then I recognized it, and intentionally left it!)
