Companies join a #DeepSeaMining rush after Trump executive order, as regulators fast-track permits

Trump’s order suggests the U.S. will decide for itself when to mine the global seabed, reversing the decision of previous administrations to honor the seabed authority’s rules.

WASHINGTON (AP) — "In the year since President Donald Trump signed an executive order promising to create a deep-sea mining industry from scratch, businesses have raised millions of dollars from investors, stock prices have soared and federal regulators have raced to fast-track a permitting process.

"At least nine companies are in talks with the government for access to seabed minerals, according to an Associated Press review. Sections of the seafloor from #AmericanSamoa to #Alaska could be auctioned for offshore mining this summer and through the fall.

All the action suggests the U.S. may soon give the green light for companies to commercially mine the seabed — something that’s never been done in international waters.

"But a close look at some of the companies involved reveals uncertain track records and histories spattered with legal disputes, while major questions about how the minerals would be processed and refined remain unanswered. Watchers of the nascent industry are skeptical the promised riches will ever materialize."

So, it seems that technology isn't the problem. It's #HumanGreed! The #IndustrialAge happened not to make life easier for people (though it did in some ways), it was to make money selling shit to make life easier for people (without regard of the consequences -- like PFAS and plastics), and produce cheap shit to profit some fat-cat CEOs and investors. I mean technology is just using tools -- even crows know how to do that! But who is profiting from selling the *tools* that we are told will make our lives easier, faster, more convenient? We know who. People like #NikolaTesla are out there -- willing to create tools to benefit humankind and not destroy the planet. But unfortunately, there are far more #Edisons out there!

#Kerala fishermen up in arms against #DeepSeaMining proposal off #Kollam coast

"The fishermen in Kerala have already launched several protests against the proposed plan to open up the sea to private mining companies as part of the Union Government’s ‘Blue Economy’ initiative.

"All the fishermen’s associations stand united in their protests against this proposal, alleging that it would bring an end to the fisheries sector in the country, not only in the #ArabianSea but also in the #BayOfBengal.

“ 'The mining, according to the scientific report we have, can disturb the seabed and completely destroy fish spawning habitats. It can also release poisonous gases trapped on the #DeepSeaFloor, causing severe #environmental issues,' Kerala Minister for Fisheries, Saji Cherian, told PTI.

"He said that deep-sea mining requires huge investments and heavy machinery, meaning only #multinational #corporations will be involved, making these areas completely inaccessible to poor fishermen.

"The Kerala government, which is strongly opposing this project, passed a resolution in the Assembly urging the Centre to withdraw it.

"The Minister said the proposed site, off the Kollam shore in Kerala in the Arabian Sea, is very rich in marine resources and serves as a lifeline for fishermen from Kerala and other states.

“ 'We have a highly diverse and extensive fish population in this area. The mining will completely wipe out this habitat, severely affecting the livelihood of fishermen in our region,' Saji Cherian said."
