Shame doesn’t shout.
It whispers: Don’t be seen. Don’t risk it.

Every day abroad is full of ups and downs. Small apartments, lonely streets, and moments of doubt. But in the struggle, I see people for who they really are — their challenges, their courage. And in seeing, I find wealth.

Rich in the Human Experience

Every time I feel a bit nauseous while overseas, I wonder why I’m doing this.

Vientiane is teaching me how reserved Lao culture really is.
People tell you it’s a relief to be open with you — and then they disappear.
Saving face here can mean being sick alone, hurting alone, and ghosting quietly.
As an expat, I notice it.
But living here and disagreeing with it? That must be much harder.

We’re so used to time being one-way that we rarely stop to ask what that constraint quietly shapes about memory, identity, consequence, and meaning.

Some limits don’t just restrict us. They organise how experience hangs together at all.

First in a short series circling the limits we live inside, and what those limits quietly shape, and how we make sense of being here.

One-Dimensional Time: The Arrow That Owns Us • Pedro Innecco

A reflection on one-dimensional time, irreversibility, and why the constraint that limits us is what makes human experience possible.

Pedro Innecco

I’m going to be honest: when you spend a long time in any country, the frustrations can build up, and you can find yourself hating everyone. That isn’t racism — it’s the same as when a local has a bad few days and ends up hating people in general.

It’s just a cloud, and it does pass. I never actually hated the people; I was sick, exhausted, and having a bad time.
