EL PAÍS in English | The flip side of New York’s skyline: Crumbling public housing by María Antonia Sánchez-Vallejo Cobo

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

New York’s skyline may be dominated by luxury towers, but a hidden crisis looms in its public‑housing sector: nearly one in 20 residents—mostly African‑American and Latino—live in aging NYCHA complexes that are increasingly costly to repair, with some buildings so deteriorated they are slated for demolition. The city’s $1.2 billion plan for four Chelsea projects would replace 17 low‑rise apartments with six new skyscrapers, rehousing current tenants while adding mixed‑rent and premium units, a move backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani but opposed by activists and delayed by lawsuits. The proposal highlights broader challenges: soaring market rents, long waiting lists, limited federal vouchers, and a tentative progressive tax on expensive vacant properties that together underscore the precarious future of New York’s social‑housing system.

Evening sights at #MadisonSquareGarden in #NYC following last night's #Springsteen concert. The old Farley Post Office, repurposed as the Moynihan Train Hall extension of Penn Station is lit beautifully at night. Looking east, we have the #EmpireStateBuilding lit in green. Sadly this view will likely be blocked when a planned supertall goes up where the old Pennsylvania Hotel once stood. Looking west, we have the towers of #HudsonYards. And inside, the iconic ceiling - there's no doubt where you are. Despite getting home after 1AM, I'm grateful we can get into the city and enjoy all it has to offer. As someone who remembers the dark gritty days of the 70s, it's nice to see the city clean, brightly lit and beautiful.
Visiting family in New York (United States), and went to the Vessel (this large building with a unique construct). I absolutely love the symmetry of the stairs when viewed from the top floor. #nyc #architecture #pixelfed #pxlmo #streetphotography #symmetry #stairs #hudsonyards #photography

The High Line

A photography field trip with the Princeton Photo Workshop took me to The High Line and the Vessel at Hudson Yards. Shooting with my Fujifilm X-T2 and Jamie Chance's Urban Chrome film simulation recipe, I explored street photography on the elevated park before heading to the Vessel for silhouette work at sunset.

Past and present of High Line; it used to be an industrial neighborhood. It's my favorite touristy place in the city. #nyc #highline #hudsonyards #architecture #streetphotography #blackandwhite #monochrome #darktable @shaymin84
