Obviously not a
#trainTrack anymore, but it used to be from 1848 to 1998. Hubbrücke is one of Germany's largest lift bridges and a listed monument. Since the 2000s, it has been a pedestrian
#bridge and a piece of public
#art. Its restoration was funded by donations, with donors inscribing messages on the wooden planks (like the one you see here) as well as commemorative plaques on the bridge. While the plaques aren't visible in this photo, you can spot plenty of love locks. Needless to say, it's a beloved Magdeburg landmark.
Unfortunately, the bridge was closed indefinitely this summer without warning. The owner – an architect who had to purchase three old bridges to acquire a nearby property – founded a club for its maintenance. The club claims the city imposed insurmountable bureaucratic hurdles and denied funding. (Keep in mind the owner is liable if anyone is injured on the bridge, and mandatory safety checks are costly!) The city, however, argues that the bridge is privately owned and thus the owner's responsibility, though financial assistance is available if an application is submitted. 🤷
I'm not sure whom to believe, but the result is clear: Hubbrücke is fenced off, and everyone is frustrated. Here's hoping a solution is found soon so the bridge can reopen. 🥺
