At Readercon, Gregory Feeley describes a story that the late great Howard Waldrop started but never continued:

"He had the idea, that the Chinese make it to Mars first; the title, 'Mars Is Red'; the slogan, 'The Great Leap Upward.'

And the first line: 'The Americans are begging outside the doors again.'"

Howard Is Gone | Not a Blog

"Man-Mountain Gentian" by Howard Waldrop, the fifth story in The Year's Best Science Fiction: First Annual Collection has a light science fiction element, but I like anthologies that really stretch the boundaries of a genre. It takes place in what was a near-future context in 1983, early 21st century Tokyo. The sport of Zen-Sumo, or more plainly, psychic Sumo wrestling, is a global obsession.
