Capitalism, Socialism, and the Battle of Ideas · Howard County for Human Dignity
## Hosted by HoCo for Human Dignity • Led by Dr. Jared Ball **When**: Wednesday, December 17, 5:30–7:00 pm **Where**: Hockley Room **Hosted by**: Howard County for Human Dignity (HoCo for Human Dignity) **Discussion Leader**: Dr. Jared Ball **Featuring**: Claudia De La Cruz, Activist and former Party for Socialism and Liberation presidential candidate In the wake of Mamdani’s victory and a growing openness to alternatives to the status quo, many people are asking: What is socialism actually? How is it different from capitalism? And why are we taught to fear it so intensely? Join HoCo for Human Dignity for a community discussion led by Dr. Jared Ball on the real differences between capitalism and socialism. We’ll look at how advertising, PR, and psychological warfare shape what we believe is “common sense,” who benefits from that, and what a different kind of society could look like. We’ll explore questions like: - What are the core values and assumptions of capitalism vs. socialism? - How do these systems shape our daily lives — work, housing, healthcare, education? - What role does marketing, media, and psychological warfare play in keeping people skeptical of socialism? - How can we build power for working people and communities instead of corporations and billionaires? We’ll also encourage attendees to read Socialist Reconstruction from the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) as a way to go deeper, and talk about bringing PSL and other organizers/experts into future sessions. All are welcome — whether you already identify as a socialist, are curious and skeptical, or just want a space to ask honest questions and think together about a different future.
