House Finch Enjoying a Snack
I take so many good, detailed pictures of birds right in my backyard that it's often hard to decide which ones to share. My photos frequently feature a redundancy of species, but I hope you like them anyway. This afternoon, I found several photos I thought were interesting, but I moved on, hoping for something better. This photo of a female house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) isn't necessarily better than the others. What caught my eye was the tubular object being held by the finch. I don't know what it is—probably a seed of some sort. There are no seeds of that shape in my mix. Perhaps it's an optical illusion, and what she's holding is a broken shell of a sunflower seed, positioned in such a way that only the inside of the shell is visible.
