Two Finches, One Direction

Here are two male house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus) who were around one spring.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

The House Finches are back and flirting with each other *and* posing for us outside my office window.

Don't Talk to Me

This image of a house finch couple (Haemorhous mexicanus) reminded me of a pair mid-spat. The male stares forward stoically, as if bracing for silence, while the female turns away—her posture so pointed that if she had a hand, she’d be holding it up, palm out, in a gesture of sovereign dismissal.

Two Notes on a Branch

This wasn’t the image I intended to work on this morning—I moved it to my working folder by mistake. But once it was there, I decided to follow its lead. The photo captures a house finch couple (Haemorhous mexicanus) perched quietly on a branch, as if pausing to gather their thoughts together.

The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Take a look:

House Finch Courtship

This morning, I watched a group of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus). Among them was a single male, and wherever he moved, the gathering of female finches followed. I observed this same behavior last spring—it seems to be a seasonal pattern. At times, the females jostled for position, occasionally engaging in brief scuffles, seemingly competing for proximity to him. It’s a fascinating dynamic to witness. This photo captures the male along with most of the females, though one or two were just outside the frame.

I feel like this glimpse into the life of a pair of House Finches somehow gives us insight into married life. :-)

House Finch Enjoying a Snack

I take so many good, detailed pictures of birds right in my backyard that it's often hard to decide which ones to share. My photos frequently feature a redundancy of species, but I hope you like them anyway. This afternoon, I found several photos I thought were interesting, but I moved on, hoping for something better. This photo of a female house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) isn't necessarily better than the others. What caught my eye was the tubular object being held by the finch. I don't know what it is—probably a seed of some sort. There are no seeds of that shape in my mix. Perhaps it's an optical illusion, and what she's holding is a broken shell of a sunflower seed, positioned in such a way that only the inside of the shell is visible.

Visit my photo gallery for an enchanting glimpse of backyard wildlife, where even the smallest details tell a story.

Finches in Bloom

I've been relying on my ever-expanding photo library for my posts lately. The downside is that I probably won't discover any new species among them. I need to get outside, but it's cold, and I've been feeling a bit lazy lately. However, I still come across some pretty images to share. In this one, you can see a trio of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), two females and a male, surrounding a pink crepe myrtle flower. I think this is the best picture I've posted today.

Come explore my photo gallery, where finches and flowers come to life in vibrant harmony:
