Spent all this time trying to work out how to get the Dropbox app to sync through the hotel wifi, trying to figure out what combination of VPN or proxy would let me download my 129GB of critical data.

The solution was simple, and was right in front of me the entire time. Don't use the sync tool. It won't tell you why it's not working, and won't even really tell you it's not working.

Instead, use Dropbox in a browser and suck down the files over HTTPS.
