A palm-like tree keeps growing taller than the greenhouse so I cut the top today. Maybe it will root in water. If so, I'll give it to a friend. To my surprise the pear tree is both still blooming and already setting rather a lot of fruit. I'm trying espresso grounds around basil but I don't think it will dissuade the snails. #garden #gardening #estufa #horta #porto

Cozy rainy day. Summer squash small but are blooming, the few nasturtia to make it are ample!, re-seeded beans & peas are making up for lost time, breakfast for five so I just asked for "uma caixa grande" which may have been an error. By tomorrow I may just heat some up (hot as your oven will go, 4 to 5 minutes, com canela) and hand them to strangers in the street 😂

@yvan shared a really detailed message about Weck jars and introduced me to a new source to buy from without spending 2x the product cost on shipping, customs, and VAT. I've shown the Portuguese version; there's one for the UK as well. I didn't move any of my canning equipment or jars from the US to PT so now I start over. The pears last year required a lot of editing, but then, we hadn't moved in yet. I hope picking rather than wind fall will help. I plan to can. Last year's persimmons were sadly compost. And apparently they don't can safely but they dry and freeze. My tomatoes are not impressive -- likely bad timing as I learn new rhythms -- but I still have hopes for putting up sauce. Maybe the squash will do well enough to cube & can for future soup. I also ordered bottles for vanilla, yogurt, and kombucha. The markets here will sell fruit & berries by the kilo before long. Companion plants are coming along ! The persimmon tree has such unusual flowers. Salad tonight: rocket, lettuce, spinach, carrots, and pansies from the garden with some store-bought oranges and avocados to round it out. #bloomscrolling #garden #gardening #growityourself #horta #porto

New plan: create the wooden markers while starting the seeds. I'm never going to have more time later! I'm maybe a couple of weeks from harvest for the first of the early crop potatoes which is early than I expected, so I get one last shot at late planted tomatoes, butternut squash, and I'm starting watermelon a little early. The second photo is from weeding--oh boy, I have a few years ahead in this one. Third photo is the lavender plant I wanted to put in the bed I was weeding but see there's no point, so it's now tucked into a vegetable bed. Not sure how the cucumber lost half a leaf, hm. But the strawberries are coming along, maybe one more day or two for the first strawberry of the year. #garden #gardening #growyourown #horta #porto
