The maggots churned in the container. The doctor said that it needed to be done after the debridement. I didn’t care, the thought of sticking my foot in there was sickening. I turned my head as the nurses gently placed my foot in the writhing mass. I had to fight the gag reflex.The nipping sensation was painful, but the pain meds kept the full extent at bay. After 10 minutes, they removed my foot and started applying a bandage, the gaping wound quickly hidden.

The base of my skull buzzes as I pick up some bleach and a new scouring pad from the market. I’ve been away from my house for too long. When I get back, I must remember to clean the oven, clean the stovetop, clean the sink. In the checkout queue, I drop my basket onto the counter, and then I see her again. The new girl. So many have come and gone through the years that I barely remember them. Their polite gazes always slip off of me when I come through their checkouts.

One of my favourite horror reads this year. Ian Muneshwar’s “Dick Pig” is tense from the opening and only screws tighter as it goes. On the longer side, but reads very fast!
