#Hoodia gordonii is not a #cactus, but like many other #african succulents developed similar forms as the #american cacti, adapting to similar climate conditions.
And yes, Aloe vera is another plant well known for its health benefits.

@sebastian That was very interesting about the #Hoodia gordonii, presumably a cactus? We have relied on indigenous people's knowledge for ages, for business advantage. I recently had prescribed for me an aloe vera cream, for skin recovering from radio therapy. I was delighted to see it was made in Tenerife, where aloes grow (as in other Canary Islands) so local people gain something from exporting it.

In 1977, the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) isolated the ingredient .. for its putative appetite-suppressant effect, patented it in 1996, then granted UK-based Phytopharm a license, with Pfizer to isolate active ingredients from the extracts and look into synthesizing them.
