Honolulu jury finds Maui’s Dr. Gerhardt Konig guilty of attempted manslaughter

Dr. Gerhardt Konig, 47, is an anesthesiologist from Maui, Maui County, Hawaii, United States. He and his first wife Jessica L. Patella have two sons together including Emile Konig, 19.

Konig’s second wife Arielle Konig, 37, is a nuclear engineer. They lived on Maui with their two sons Olin Konig and Viggo Konig.

A jury in Honolulu, Hawaii has found Gerhardt guilty of attempted manslaughter regarding a violent altercation with Arielle on the Pali Puka trail on Oahu, Honolulu. The verdict, delivered after eight hours of deliberation following a three-week trial, rejected the more serious charge of second-degree attempted murder. Instead, jurors determined the anesthesiologist acted under “extreme mental or emotional disturbance”.

The incident occurred on March 24, 2025, during a hike intended to celebrate Arielle’s birthday. Prosecutors alleged that Gerhardt, obsessed with his wife’s recent emotional affair with a coworker, attempted to shove her off a cliff. When that failed, they claimed he tried to inject her with a syringe and struck her repeatedly with a lava rock. The attack reportedly ended only when other hikers intervened and contacted authorities. An emergency physician testified that Arielle suffered a deep skull laceration with rock fragments embedded in the wound.

In contrast, Gerhardt testified for two days, claiming he acted in self-defense. He alleged that Arielle was the aggressor, asserting she struck him and attempted to push him off the trail.

Emile testified that Gerhardt admitted to trying to Arielle during a phone call after the event. The latter disputed the context of that statement, maintaining he never intended to murder her.

Jury foreperson Makalapua Atkins noted that the panel did not believe the evidence supported an intent to murder. While the defense expressed gratitude that Gerhardt avoided a potential life sentence, attorney Thomas Otake confirmed plans to appeal the conviction. Prosecuting attorney Joel Garner stated that while the government respects the jury’s role, they will seek the maximum penalty for the Class A felony.

Currently held at the O’ahu Community Correctional Center in Honolulu, Gerhardt faces up to 20 years in prison or the possibility of probation. His sentencing is scheduled for August 13, 2026.
