A bit of a #ThickTrunkThursday postscript, but now that the weather is nice in #Portland, we are finally able to use the beautiful table that #BurlAndGrain in #HillsboroOR made from our beloved #HoneyLocust that fell over in the ice storm two years ago!

One of the many crazy things about #HoneyLocust trees (like the ones that are regrowing in our backyard) is that they have bipinnate or doubly pinnate leaves, where each leaf is made up of multiple leaflets and those leaflets are made up of multiple leaflets. This whole structure is one single leaf that has fallen.

I didn't realize that when the #HoneyLocust in our backyard was knocked down in the ice storm, we were also losing access to a ton of free beans!

One of the #HoneyLocust sprouts fell over in the vigorous #Portland wind last night. I was hoping the roots from the former tree were strong enough to hold them up without support, but I guess not.

I tied the tree back up, so here's hoping that it recovers, and snapping the roots in that direction doesn't lead to it being permanently weak on that side so it falls over again in a few years. Alternately, I could cut it down and start again from another sprout, but who knows what is best.

I picked the original #HoneyLocust up from #BurlAndGrain on Friday, where it was made in to a fantastic live-edge table and benches!

Now we just need to finish designing and build an enclosed patio for it to live outside, yet protected from the weather.

The garden center doesn't sell any bamboo poles longer than 12 feet, so I guess the baby groots are just going to do what they want above that point.

Also, wow, that thing grew around 4 feet in two and a half weeks. I heard that a #HoneyLocust can grow fast, but this is ridiculous.

Wow, crazy how small our baby groots were last year at this time. They've quickly gone from two-foot-tall sprouts (growing from the roots of our fallen Honey Locust tree) to over 12 feet now. It might not be that many years that we have to live without shade in the backyard after all.
