The Home Computer War

In 1979, Atari and Texas Instruments (TI) established a new category of computer, which hybridized the features of the personal computer and video game console. Like a video game system, they had d…

Sinclair

Sinclair Research made some of the most influential and affordable home computers of the early 1980s.(...)

I wish I had taken more photos of my computers back in the interesting time before PCs and Macs took over. I went through so many.

I so wish that.

Edit: A small gallery of photos I did happen to take of some of my systems from long past = https://www.flickr.com/photos/blakespot/albums/72157669919294028/

My Oldest Computer Photos

Photos in thus gallery range from ~1980 to 1992. These are photos of my original ownership of these systems, not systems I've more recently acquired since I started collecting vintage computers. I no longer own any of these particular machines shown in the photos.

Just published: The chapter from Melanie Fritsch and me about the historical ways to (de)scribe #videogame music and sounds. I contributed a part about sound generation and description wiht #BASIC for the #Atari #8-Bit #HomeComputers

IS BASIC from the #Enterprise128 is the foremost advanced #BASIC dialects for #8Bit #HomeComputers. But it is very(!) slow. The "Creative Computing Benchmark" took nearly 5 minutes to run (comparable to the #SinclairZXSpectrum and the #TRS80 Model 100) but produced excellent results: "accuracy" is quite good (comparable with #BBCMicro) and "random" is the best of all computers measured in the contest from 1984:
The ZX Spectrum was launched 1983 as #Timex Sinclair 2068 computer on the US market. With a #Z80A CPU running on 3.5 MHz this beautiful #homecomputer was capable to draw electric images on a regular telly. With a resolution of 256×192 #pixels even limited to 15 colours it was great for the budget.

Print'n'Plotter sold their #graphics software under the same product name #Paintbox like #Quantel, but for #Sinclair #homecomputers. While #colourClash was a serious limitation in the 80s, it's a #8bit #cgi #glitch effect today available in smartphone camera apps.

Our #vector #graphic #illustration of this legendary #retrocomputer is a form of #digital #lithography. #IT's made in #svg tech and created with #Inkscape, not #Adobe #Illustrator #Ai

Impact was guaranteed when the decision to enter the market of #microcomputers was made by #IBM. In retrospect it wasn't their capacity of unique hardware design and outstanding software development skills that made their #PC so successful.

Of course the #BigBlue #corporation with #Sstem360 #mainframe #computers ignored niche markets like #homecomputers for most of the 1970s. As #marketleaders they did #LOL hard about #hobbyists, especially since #DEC challenged them hard with better #minicomputers.

Simultaneously, IBM built a team of young talented engineers in Boca Raton, Florida, to develop a #microcomputer in secrecy, and fast! Somehow, directors #WilliamLowe & #PhilipDonEstridge made a decision under pressure that turned out to be great for the entire market, not their employer exclusively.

Considering the time (and #$hits) given, it's only logical that they relied heavily on free available components instead of own #chipdesigns. But somehow, the lack of #IP passed their lawyers and IP team before #InternationalBusinessMachines went public.

1981, August 12th, the IBM #PC5150 changed the world of #PersonalComputers, by accident (for the better of humanity).
