In Winningen (Mayen-Koblenz district) on the Lower Moselle, there is a tradition of the ‘wine witch’. In this scene at a house in Winningen, the flute player Pfeifenhans overpowers the witch, who had helped herself to the best wine. The legend originated after the witch hunts in Winningen (and elsewhere) in the 17th century. Nowadays, a wine witch is elected every year alongside a wine queen.
