Also: A 10th century replica of the #HolyLance, one of two copies Otto III had made for the monarchs of Poland respectively Hungary - supposedly also transferring small traces of the original relic into both, is today exhibited in #Cracow.
Only in the 13th century that #HolyLance finally has been linked to the weapon of #Longinus which pierced the side of Christ - so now it's him mentioned by name on the golden sleeve.
This #HolyLance was first said to be the lance of #SaintMaurice - and an original silver sleeve (underneath the golden one seen today) explicitly mentions him by name … as well as a #nail, used for the crucifixion of Jesus, which was believed to have been embedded into the tip.
The probably best known #HolyLance, and the one Indy deals with, is the relic today on display in the treasury of #Vienna's Hofburg. According contemporary sources, Holy Roman Emperors came into its possession in the 10th century - later making it part of the Imperial Regalia.

And a #HolyLance described as "the spear which pierced Jesus" in a 13th century manuscript comes from the monastery of #Geghard in #Armenia.

Enshrined in a 17th-century reliquary it is on display at the #ManoogianMuseum in #Vagharshapat (previously: #Echmiadzin) today.

Another of these #HolyLance relics, first mentioned in AD 570, was stored in #Constantinople for a long time. Its tip has been sold to Louis IX of #France, but later disappeared.

The larger part ended up in #Rome and is kept underneath Saint Peter's Basilica today.

One such #HolyLance is said to have been discovered by a monk (after the location allegedly was revealed to him in a vision) during the Siege of #Antioch in 1098.

Sources mentioning such an object go back as far as the 10th century, but its whereabouts today are unknown.
