My friend became unusually agitated. Roamer, he said to his visitor, you don't belong into this story.

Watson, you have the gift. Your breakfast is so much pleasanter than Mrs Hudson's. Nourishing but light. It's hard to get the balance right. Those fried beetroot slices are a stroke of genius, Watson.

Ah, Watson, there you are. Mycroft brought us a new case. I shan't reveal it to you until after dinner. We shall dine in Folkestone. Yes, Watson, Folkestone. I have booked us a table at the Tangled Net. Their poached turbot is excellent. Oh, don't look so puzzled, Watson. The sea air will do us good. And hurry, grab your emergency suitcase, the cab to Victoria Station is waiting outside.
Ah, Watson. No, not today. I shan't do any work today. Just idling along for a while, my friend, no targets. Take a seat and have some of Mrs Hudson's biscuits. They are superb.
Ah, Lestrade. Watson tells me that your new AI toy Claudi has solved the case of the missing Ethernet cable. Oh, indeed? The Duke of Timberland?
So sorry, Lestrade, but Claudi is wrong. Timberland couldn't have done it, as is obvious to anyone who looks at the actual case with open eyes. Afraid I can't explain further at this moment, terribly busy. But why don't you pay a visit to the Duke's daughter. Ask her about her NeXTcube. Yes, Lestrade, her NeXTcube. Find someone who can explain it to you.
And get rid of Claudi. You don't really need any additional source of blunder and incompetence at the Yard, do you Lestrade?

I was blind to the obvious, Watson. I realised too late just how far and deep Moriarty has spun his fiendish network. Every minister and undersecretary in Whitehall, the CEO and CTO of every major corporation, the heads of our learned institutions, they all are part of Professor Moriarty's vast attention channelling machine. I cannot even trust Mycroft any more.
Our intriguing visitor has provided us with the most ingenious antidote, my friend. Lady Joan (his tone changed as he said the mysterious woman's name) has found a way to let people speak outside the Professor's net. Her strange Protocol is far from elegant, but it is immune to Moriarty's spell. Lady Joan (again, his voice became warmer as he said her name) wields this clumsy weapon with natural grace and with surprising efficiency. Her followers are an awkward lot; we will join them. Ah, I hear someone at the door. Joan has arrived!
Mrs Hudson had brought them tea. My friend and his guest sat close together and spoke intensely for a long time. At the end they both rose and performed what appeared to be a curious little ritual. They both raised their right arms, formed fists, and bumped their fists gently into each other, sharing a conspiratory smile. Most extraordinary. I admit I could not help blushing a little when I saw it.
Later that evening Holmes came to my study. Our visitor is a remarkable woman and our most powerful ally yet, Watson. Lady Joan will join me again tomorrow, I will take her to Imperial College to meet my old friend Professor Forthlisp. I need you to do some research for me, Watson. Find out what you can about something called the ActivityPub Protocol. I don't want to trouble Lady Joan with too many questions that have obvious answers. She really is the most remarkable woman, Watson.

Well, I'd say this concludes the case, Watson. Much too boring to be turned into one of your pieces, I dare say. That it was Sir Montague who had burned the papers was obvious from the start, was it not. Even Lestrade would have noticed it, eventually. The only challenge left was to find the discarded USB stick, and doing that required little imagination, merely a good deal of steady footwork. Important perhaps, but rather tedious and unexciting, wouldn't you agree? I need to be more careful in the cases I take on, Watson. I am too old for tedium.
I shan't be working today, Watson. When looking for the Barnaby papers I stumbled upon the good old violin case, and I thought I could try my hand at the fiddle again. The magic of music, eh?
Excellent idea, Holmes, playing your trusted violin will do you all manner of good. Did I mention that I'm off to Kent to visit my cousin Alfie? Back next week.
