When the royal family split into two parties due to a succession struggle between two brothers in the second half of the 13th century, the Bakufu took advantage of this conflict to try to divide the power of the Imperial Court and had the two royal parties perform periodic government changes.
In the same period, in the latter 13th century, the Yuan (Mongolian Dynasty in China) raided the Kyushu Islands. The Bakufu of Kamakura and their warriors fought off the attacks after a big struggle. Still, the Bakufuβs authority became weakened by the commanders who thought the rewards had disaffected.
The ruins of Minami-in Temple
Between "Kita-in" and "Naka-in", two famous temples in Kawagoe, there is a corner where Jizo statues and gravestones are lined up haphazardly.
These are the ruins of Minami-in.
However, due to the abolition of Buddhism in the Meiji period (1868-1912), Minami-in was closed down.
