The Sea Monster of the HMS Daedalus (1848)

While sailing towards Plymouth, the crew of the HMS Daedalus witnessed an enormous serpent-like creature swimming alongside their ship for twenty minutes.
Captain Peter M'Quhae reported the beast as being roughly 60 feet long with a "maned" head held high above the water. Unlike typical "tall tales" from drunken sailors, this was a formal report by a respected Royal Navy officer and several witnesses.
Despite various theories involving giant squid or rogue elephant seals, the creature's identity remains a biological mystery.
