Epochs of FashionComparing Francois Boucher’s portrait of Madame de Pompadour and an 1860s Victorian fancy dress costume which clearly references the painting! While the visual characteristics of the mid-1700s gown are taken on board - such as the pink bows and the open-front mantua construction - the Victorian costume is very firmly Victorian.
