The waves in *The Whirlpools of Awa* coil like ink on wet paper, their edges bleeding into the void above. Hiroshige’s calligraphy anchors the chaos, suggesting nature’s fleeting order.
Does the shoreline’s faint outline pull the eye outward—or deeper into the vortex?

“Sudden Shower Over Shin-Ōhashi bridge and Atake” by Hiroshige
"Sudden Shower Over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake" is one of Hiroshige's most famous works from his 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' series. The painting captures a dramatic moment during a sudden shower, showcasing the artist's skill in depicting weather and light. It reflects Hiroshige's attention to detail and his ability to convey a sense of place and atmosphere. I've been teaching myself Japanese woodblock printing - "mokuhanga" - for a bit now, so it might be interesting to post something of my attempts.
My current print is the 'Fuchū' vignette taken from panel 6 of #Hiroshige's 'harimaz-e' series, Pictures of the Fifty-three Stations of the #Tokaido (with slightly modified border proportions to fit the block size).
Nice and simple 🤨
First step: make a digital copy, separating each colour onto its own layer.
