The Charles C. Leary is the first studio album by Devendra Banhart. It was released on August 8, 2002, through the label Hinah.
Freak Folk wrote on Rate My Music:
Devendra Banhart's first record (and one of the first freak folk albums in general) holds a lotta lo-fi charm in the recordings, pairing some pretty simplistic folk passages with those classic freaky vocals the genre's known for. Many might be annoyed by those vocal styles but if something like this filters you, the genre aint for ya cause these are some fun vocals! I think they pair quite well with the more traditional folk inspo in the acoustic guitar strumming, and for a record only released on CD it really exudes the vibes of an underground folk tape in its lo-fi sound...
