Escape characters are a practical application of Hilbert's Hotel.

I. In this hotel, each room has a label, which is a string, and an inhabitant, which is also a string. Originally, these strings are equal and consist only of printable characters. Then we want to find space for strings with arbitrary characters and give order to the strings with backslashes in them to move to different rooms. "C:\Windows\" moves to "C:\\Windows\\", "\n" moves to "\\n" and so on, so that each string with backslashes is now in a room with double backslashes. Then strings with unprintable characters move into some of the empty rooms: The string that contains only a newline character now lives in the room with "\n" on the door, and the same way with other strings.

We can now use in our programming languages the labels on the doors to conjure up the strings in the rooms.
