On November 22nd, 1987, at approximately 9:00 PM, Chicago's WGN-TV was hijacked briefly by an unknown figure wearing a rubber Max Headroom mask. The intrusion lasted only a few seconds before being cut off by engineers at WGN-TV.
at 11:00 PM, viewers of Chicago's PBS affiliate, WTTW-TV, were settling down to watch the Doctor Who serial, Horror of Fang Rock.
And then, minutes to the story, and out of nowhere, came Max Headroom once again... and the most infamous signal hijacking and trolling incident to ever hit the airwaves.
For approximately 90 seconds, "Max" made comments about Chuck Swirsky, calling him a "fricking liberal", holding up a Pepsi can and tossing it while saying "Catch the Wave" (Max Headroom was a Coca-Cola spokesperson), making comments about dirty gloves, humming the Clutch Cargo theme and quipping "I still see the X!" (the last line of the last Clutch Cargo episode, not the oft-misheard "I stole CBS!"), complaining about his "piles" while making loud farting noises, and towards the end of the broadcast, being spanked by a French maid with a fly swatter. The transmission was finally cut off after that, dropping viewers back to the Doctor commenting "As far as I can tell, a massive electrical shock. He died instantly."
To this day, no one knows who "Max" was, where they came from, or for what reason they did it. It's still one of the most mysterious occurrences, and still has that air of mystique to this day. And honestly, let "Max" stay anonymous. It's a lot better and a lot cooler that way!
