A win today for the #ocean and all the #wildlife therein!
Today the #HighSeasTreaty goes into effect. Ratified by 83 nations, the treaty is built around four principles protecting the preservation of international waters. Existing laws covered national jurisdictions, but this Treaty provides frameworks to establish protected areas and mandate #environmental impact assessments in international waters.
Major political geography event: #BBNJ aka "#HighSeasTreaty" takes effect today, meaning new laws governing environmental protection in intl. waters are now binding on 81 countries that have so far ratified it, including #Brazil, #China, #Japan, #France, #Germany.
