My new 2026 subscription, the mighty High Country News. Longtime rss lurker but I'm happier to support in depth longform intermountain journalism and have it in print around the house.

The first issue featuring Portland's Albina music history is a tad on the nose, has me all squared up.

@heidilifeldman #DemocracyDocket and #HighCountryNews both look interesting - thanks!

I try to tune out the noise that these revolutionary rulers are producing by reading about the USA only on one day every week. This new reality is difficult enough to digest, and I can't handle that more often without losing hope (which is what they want to achieve).

My assumption is this propaganda shock-wave won't last forever, just like propaganda took a break for a few short years after the 1st WW.

My friend Emily Withnall, for #highcountrynews:

"When it took me an hour to plant just eight trees, I realized that taking 50 had been overly ambitious. I looked east across the mountainside, where charcoaled trees seemed to stretch out forever. Across the stream to the north, another mountainside appeared as an endless ripple of black trees...Who are we, I wondered, to pretend we can ever repair the harm we’ve caused?"

The aftermath of the Hermit’s Peak and Calf Canyon Fires

Devastation is hard to face, but turning away is harder.

Hate groups in western Washington echo the past

The bigotry displayed when white supremacists disrupted a Pride celebration in Centralia repeats a pattern that dates back to 1919.

Whales, bats and birds sound different depending on where they live. So do elk, according to new research."
"Pennsylvania’s elk herds were translocated from the West in the early 1900s, and today they have longer tonal whistles and quieter bugles than elk in Colorado. Meanwhile, bugles change frequency from low to high tones more sharply in Wyoming than they do in Pennsylvania or Colorado."

The Trojan horse of Native theater

Larissa FastHorse’s ‘The Thanksgiving Play’ made Broadway history. That’s a good thing — right?
