Here is a pair of adults near the nest, perhaps biding their time until sunset, when they might set out for a crab dinner.

Fairly rare and reclusive among herons, I rarely see these. From a while back, I do have a few images of them on the ground, in my virtual rookery @

The birds are returning after that long, cold winter. I watched yesterday’s sunset from the boardwalk at the west end of our lake. This great blue heron watched it from a nearby tree.
