#Starmer has just made the #HouseOfLords even worse.
In 1958, the Lords was a set of #HereditaryPeers & bishops. On Tuesday, the House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Bill passed, making the Lords a bunch only of #LifePeers & bishops. 68 years from a club of #inbreds to a club of #cronies & donors.
The #ParliamentAct1911 promised an elected upper house, but it never arrived. 115 years later, the so-called "#LabourParty" leaves bishops as the only independent Lords. This is not #democracy.
Sounds like good news. The last of the UK's hereditary peers pose for a group photo before being stripped of their political privilege.
Reality: it's bad news. The #hereditaryPeers and the #bishops are the only members of the #HouseOfLords who are not cronies appointed by the#PrimeMinister.
The whole House of Lords should be replaced by a democratic chamber, but until then the hereditary peers and bishops are the least stinky part of the stinky sewer of corruption. #TheMadCountry
The #ElectoralReformSociety (#ERS) have another #HouseOfLords petition
#HereditaryPeers should go — Yes
As should those appointed by former PMs
BUT
"Our legislators should be chosen and thrown out by the people"
NO, NOT in the revising chamber: partisan party-politicians can't effectively revise the decisions of partisan party-politicians.
All important decisions require thinking not believing:
'All politicians must be elected' is a religion.
Don't Sign the #Petition
Don't throw the baby out with the bath water
Remove #hereditaryPeers YES
Remove Prime Minister's cronies YES
Remove religious leaders MAYBE
But, a #bicameral #parliament needs a TRUE #Senate; a house of wise elders:
Two #elected chambers fight each other along #partyPolitical lines — #evidence and #reasoning are the casualties — everyone pays the price
Argue with me 🙂

Ministers introduce plans to remove all #HereditaryPeers from Lords
