A study reveals #molecular details about the #gastric #pathogen #Helicobacter pylori's ability to bind to an inflamed stomach and how this is controlled by the stomach's pH. Increased understanding of how H. pylori #bacteria can cause a persistent lifelong infection

Study reveals how pH affects the ability of ulcer bacteria to attach

H. pylori has adherence proteins, so called adhesins, on their surface that are used for attachment to the mucus layer or on the outermost cell layer

Evolutionary 'U-turn' may mitigate antibiotic resistance, study finds

In a scientific breakthrough, Monash University researchers have discovered a revolutionary "U-turn" in the evolution of antibiotic resistance, challenging the widely accepted notion that traits once developed are irreversible.

Symptomatic infection with #Helicobacter pylori bacteria may increase the risk of developing #Alzheimer’s disease. The risk is 11 percent higher in people over 50, according to a study by #CharitéBerlin and McGill University, published in Alzheimer's & Dementia.

Press release of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin

'The colonization of our stomachs by #Helicobacter pylori is believed to predate the oldest splits between extant human populations. We identify a Hardy ecospecies of H. pylori associated with indigenous groups, isolated from people in Siberia, Canada, and USA.'

"We have established a #Helicobacter-induced accelerated disease progression mouse model, which involves infecting mice deficient in the myeloid differentiation primary response 88 gene (Myd88-/-) with H. felis. Using this model, we report here that that progression of H. felis-induced inflammation to high-grade dysplasia was associated with activation of type I interferon (IFN-I) signaling pathway and upregulation of related downstream target genes, IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs)." #Preprint

'Flagella-driven motility is essential for the entry of H. pylori into the mucus layer and for maintaining a swimming reservoir in the mucus (Fig. 3). H. pylori has a unipolar bundle of rotating sheathed flagella, with filaments composed of two flagellin proteins that evade activating the innate immune system via TLR5 due to specific adaptation of their amino acid sequences'

Fantastic to see this paper out from one of our former PhD students.

Dan did a huge amount of cultivation and metagenomic work to look at #Helicobacterpylori diversity in the human corpus and antrum. By looking at isolates from biopsy samples, Dan found each patient is initially infected with a single strain of #Helicobacter which then diversifies.
