China, explosion in a coal mine: 90 dead and 247 miners trapped.

At least 90 people have died following a gas explosion in a coal mine in China. Rescue operations are ongoing. At the time of the incident, Friday evening, 247 miners were trapped underground at the Liushenyu facility. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for the mobilization of “every means” to rescue the injured and has demanded an investigation to determine the causes of the explosion: “All regions and prefectures must learn from this incident, remain constantly vigilant regarding workplace safety and decisively prevent and contain major disasters.” Xinhua news agency reported that the trapped miners were in “critical condition” and specified that on Friday, carbon monoxide levels, a toxic and odorless gas, had exceeded the limit in the shafts.

The coal mine is located 500 kilometers southwest of Beijing, in the Shanxi province, one of China’s most important centers. The Asian giant is the world’s largest emitter of CO2 and the largest consumer of coal, a resource it considers a reliable solution to the intermittency of renewable energy supplies. Mine safety in China has improved in recent decades, but accidents remain frequent. The Liushenyu disaster is one of the deadliest recorded in China in the last decade. In 2023, a collapse of an open-pit coal mine in Inner Mongolia killed 53 people. And in 2009, an explosion in a mine in Heilongjiang province caused the death of more than 100 miners. Premier Li Qiang reiterated the instructions, demanding timely and accurate information dissemination and rigorous accountability.
