The incident occurred around 11 a.m. in the locality of Mittelangeln when a tree approximately 30 meters tall fell, striking several participants in the activity. A 16-year-old girl and a 21-year-old woman died at the scene, while the latter’s daughter, transported urgently to a hospital in Kiel, later died from her injuries. Another 18-year-old woman was seriously injured and underwent surgery at a hospital in Heide, while others sustained minor injuries.

According to initial reconstructions, approximately 50 people were in the forest, including residents and staff of a nearby care facility, participating in the traditional Easter egg hunt.

It is believed that the tree was felled by strong gusts of wind. The German Meteorological Service reported adverse weather conditions in northern Germany, with gusts ranging from 55 to 65 kilometers per hour and peaks of up to 80 kilometers per hour in more exposed areas.
