Reposting since the Education track at #FOSDEM is today. If anyone wants to talk EdTech, message me! :)
I'm particularly interested in real life experiences with #Hedy and #Luanti in the classroom.

I just stumbled upon #Hedy, and the work of Felienne Hermans on teaching coding to 12 yr olds.
This interview has SO many gems of insight on teaching, and unpacking the baggage we bring to it
"a 12 year old that’s confused will tell you that they’re confused... It’s hurtful, but it is also very useful, because then it requires you to think again, okay, but then how do I explain it in a different way?"
Can you imagine risking your career to making coding easier to learn? Meet Felienne Hermans, a professor who did just that by stepping beyond academia to redefine coding education. Disillusioned by her research's limited impact, Felienne discovered a new calling in teaching coding to underserved students. Her journey led to the creation of Hedy, a programming language designed to dismantle... […]
Reading about the development of #Hedy an introductory programming language:
"It’s really weird if your husband sends you unsolicited pull requests." 🤣

There was a time when I wrote Scala function names in Telugu, because it allowed full Unicode support.
Felienne Hermans, a professor from Netherlands implemented a subset of #Python in various natural languages for teaching programming to 12 year-old children. It's called Hedy.

I think it's a great step in the direction of decolonializing computer programming.
Does computer programming have colonial values baked in? It's not something we give much though to. 🤔

- #conlangs are funny [(#andor ?)](https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a65104189/andor-ghorman-language-explained/) but best #bookrecommendations I've had in years : [La poésie du gérondif](https://le-tripode.net/livre/jean-pierre-minaudier/poesie-du-gerondif)
- Is this #Feminism ? https://lemmy.world/c/dull_mens_club - In a sense where "dull" is a struggle against the "hero" canonical male exceptionnalism?
- #Hedy #coding #TeacherTips it does work on a 9yo ! https://hedy.org/hedy/
Apparently Replit's 'AI' code generation is being marketed as "You're programming in English"; unless I'm missing something we've been programming in English forever, real innovation is programming languages like hedy which teaches children to program in their natural language and it supports over 48 natural languages.
As always, interesting interview on #corecursive podcast. About a programming language, #hedy ,to gradually take the training wheels off and end up with a subset of #python. Interesting conversation about programming in non-english languages too.
Funny quote: "It's really weird when your husband sends you unsolicited pull requests"

More and more about #FOSDEM in my timeline! Only 2 more nights and it's on!
I'll be in the Educational Programming / FOSDEM Junior (Sunday) rooms mostly.
So if you want to learn about teaching programming, or you want to contribute to some awesome projects: drop by!
If you are bringing your kids on Sunday, enroll them in one of the kids workshops!
