I finally saw Heavier Trip and I thought it was a very flawed film.
A big strength of the original is it started low key and relatable with small-town friends in a band. Then things build up from there to the whacky insanity at the end.
This one sorta starts at insane levels and doesn't really know where to go.
The structure is part run-from-the-law, part artist-selling-out-for-fame, part gotta-raise-money-to-save-the-parents-farm. And none of those parts are done especially well.
Strangely, the most affecting thing in the film was Xytrax learning to embrace other genres of music by befriending BABYMETAL(!).
So I laughed out loud at a few bits, was still charmed by the main cast, but also baffled by the plotting and the direction of the film.
I didn't hate it, but certainly a bit of a missed opportunity.
