Yesterday was an emotionally and sensorially (sp?) draining day. I promised myself to take it easy today. There was a pre-planned meeting with a support worker this morning but that was it. He messaged me at the exact time he was supposed to be here and told me he wasn't coming. No explanation why. Always the bridesmaid, nej?
So after cooking an early lunch, I decided to watch a movie that has been on my list for quite some time: Heartstone (Hjartasteinn) from 2016, written and directed by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson.
This story is about Þór (Thor), a small 14-year-old developing feelings for his best friend Kristján. It's a wonky stumble into adulthood, but the story and acting are never crass. Instead of relying on old tropes, Guðmundsson shows a real-life look into the minds of young people hiding their developing sexualities and emotions. The tricks teenagers pull to live a life they want and deem necessary.
I wasn't ready for this movie. Two hours of gorgeous yet bleak Icelandic land- and sound-scapes, familial abuse, and societal pressures. Harm and suicide references are also present.
This film gives the viewer a lot to think about. And I'm crying.
