Wikipedia has a good overview of the #history and #use of the #DSM by #HealthcareProfessionals, #Insurers, and so forth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagnostic_and_Statistical_Manual_of_Mental_Disorders

My own understanding of the DSM grew from dealing with anti-trans activists who would try to use the DSM as a cudgel against actual #trans people.

This is perhaps why I find #ErectileDisorder to be such an interesting DSM category: I have never yet seen anyone campaigning against social inclusion of people who have ED, or denying them access to #school, higher #education, #jobs, #housing, or even #firearms ownership.

Indeed, #Rx for ED is openly marketed to the public at large, even here in Canada (*hums a few bars from the famous #GoodMorning, Good Morning! commercial).

Yet when anything terrible happens that may or does involve a trans person, it seems that the very fact of trans being within the DSM is accepted both as evidence of guilt but also the reason for the terrible thing in the first place. 🙄
