Congress Set to Break Record for Longest Government Shutdown
The U.S. government shutdown is set to make history this week — and not in a good way. By Tuesday night, the funding lapse will reach 35 days, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 under President Donald Trump.
Despite ongoing bipartisan talks among senators, there’s little hope of a deal before this milestone. The prolonged stalemate is already taking a toll across the country: millions risk losing SNAP food aid, early education centers are facing closures, air traffic control staffing is tightening, and health care premiums could rise as Obamacare subsidies edge toward expiration.
Lawmakers aren’t expected back in Washington until Monday evening, and with Speaker Mike Johnson holding firm, and American’s suffering, a resolution remains out of reach. As the shutdown drags on, frustration continues to mount nationwide — with some calling the impasse “utterly shameful.”
