Conservative and neoliberal governments underfund public hospitals until they buckle, then use the resulting "inefficiency" as an excuse to funnel public money into the pockets of private healthcare providers.
We are seeing the exact same playbook being run in Australia. Our Medicare system is being hollowed out by decades of frozen rebates and the creeping "Americanisation" of our clinics. Just like in Canada, we’re seeing "ambulance ramping" (paramedics stuck in hospital driveways for hours because there are no beds) and a growing gap where if you can’t afford private insurance, you’re stuck in a second-tier system.
When healthcare becomes a for-profit industry rather than a human right, people like Prashant pay the price. We have to stop accepting "budget constraints" as an excuse while billions are handed out in corporate subsidies. Solidarity with the healthcare workers on the front lines who are being set up to fail by these policy choices.
