I never read Wuthering Heights and only knew the most surface level info about it, namely there was a guy named Heathcliff and some woman named Catherine had an affair with him.
So I watched the recent movie version of it on HBOMax yesterday. Mainly because I love historical dramas, for the costumes and settings, if for nothing much else.
Was that supposed to be romantic? Because it was more of a horror film for me. I didn't see love, just lust and shitty communication. Heathcliff seemed like an awful person. Catherine seemed shallow and vain.
I know it's set in a time when women didn't really have choices and needed to marry strategically and love wasn't really a part of marriage for the most part. But still, what an awful situation and an awful ending.
Seen through a modern feminist lens, it's garbage. Don't get me wrong, the film was beautifully shot and had some interesting moments, but the whole concept was terrible and I don't see why this is considered a classic romance.
But what do I know? I'm an old, autistic, post-menopausal woman that has no patience for love and romance because most of what I watch is sci-fi or horror and there's really not a place for that to happen naturally in those types of stories. But still, on the rare occasions I want to watch some soft-porn "romance," I'll watch Bridgerton instead.
