On paper today's match looked like it should be one sided, with the Hawks strong favorites to win. Hawthorn captain James Sicily started the day well for his team when he won the toss and kicked to the southern end. Under the roof at Marvel Stadium a crowd of 26,425 and dominated by Hawthorn faithful, came to see the Hawks steady the ship against the West Coast Eagles after two consecutive losses to Port Adelaide and Geelong. The Hawks struggled to find a goal early with both Blake Hardwick and Nick Watson missing set shots, bad kicking would plague the Hawks for most of the day. It was almost halfway through the quarter when Jack Gunston, on a long lead, marked and kicked a goal from 45 meters out. Jack Ginnivan (back from a game in the VFL last week) kicked the second on the run after Gunston flicked a quick hand pass out to him, and he was able to snap the goal with little West Coast resistance.
With rain leading up to tonight's match, this kept the crowd numbers down at the MCG to 62,735. Carlton captain Cripps won the toss and the Blues kicked to the Punt Rd end. Hawthorn won the free kick at the first bounce and sent the ball long forward, where Chol marked and scored. Carlton didn't take long to kick their first when Hewitt was taken high 20 meters out from goal and he easily kicked the goal. While it had been wet, the skills weren't overly effected and the Blues generally won the contested ball, while the Hawks took their chances to run the ball when they won it. Callum Moore kicked the Hawk's second goal when he roved a smothered clearing kick 30 meters out from the goal square and snapped the ball home confidently under pressure. Carlton equaled the goal tally when they got the play out the back for the first time tonight and Cotterell was unmarked and unchallenged as he kicked the Blues second goal. Both teams squandered a chance to push clear on the scoreboard, and Hawthorn had a two point lead at quarter time.
Hawks looking very competitive against Essendon in the first half. Newcombe and Worpel are stars.
But.
They really need to work on those set shots!
