WASHINGTON (AP) — "Empathy is usually regarded as a virtue, a key to #HumanDecency and #kindness. And yet, with increasing momentum, voices on the #ChristianRight are preaching that it has become a vice.
"For them, empathy is a cudgel for the left: It can manipulate caring people into accepting all manner of sins according to a conservative Christian perspective, including #abortion access, #LGBTQ+ rights, illegal immigration and certain views on #social and #racial justice."

Some voices on the Christian right are arguing the virtue of empathy has become a vice. Those Christians claim empathy can manipulate people into accepting what they see as sins, like abortion access and LGBTQ+ rights. Conservative evangelicals Allie Beth Stuckey and Joe Rigney have written books within the past year criticizing certain forms of empathy. Stuckey's and Rigney's views have gained traction among President Donald Trump’s Christian base as his Republican administration enacts hard-line policies. Jimmy Swaggart, the televangelist whose multimillion-dollar ministry was crippled by his encounters with prostitutes, has died. He was 90. His death was announced Tuesday. The Louisiana native was best known for being a captivating Pentecostal preacher with a massive following before being caught on camera with a prostitute in New Orleans in 1988, one of several TV preachers brought down in the 1980s and 1990s by sex scandals. He continued preaching for decades, but with a reduced audience. In a tearful 1988 sermon, he wept and apologized, telling parishioners across the nation, “I have sinned against you.”
