So, concerning the slight distortion of #Harrison #MultibandCompressor #XTMC vs. #LinuxStudioPlugins #Multiband #Compressor on certain piano signals, I made a decision:

I actually always had liked the “Mix Comp“ preset in the Harrrison. Turn it on, set threshold and there you are. Mostly the effect is subtle, e.g. creating a more pronounced high end because the low mids wouldn't trigger my mastering limiter (usually Voxengo Elephant at 8x oversampling).

The #LSP Multiband can do the same. Yet it is very hard to handle, plus: It somehow exhausts my ears after a while. It's not something I can describe accurately. It somehow feels hard and brutal. Yet again, this is on a level normal folks using normal speakers won't hear.

So what now? Well… playing with the Attack/Release setting of the Harrison, because this makes the distortion less severe or disappear, depending on the material. The LSP interpretation of multiband compression doesn't do it for me here.

Harrison XT-MC just feels better.

3 EQs, 2.5 sounds. #Recording / #Mixdown on #Linux.

Right to left: #FabFilter #ProQ 3 does not sound. I use it for treatments that should be very transparent. Plus, I really love the UI. Did you know it has a dynamic EQ mode, too? Also it can do very steep high cut or low cut. So it's more like a surgeon's tool.

Middle: #HarrisonMixbus 10 Pro with its #Ssl9000j channel strip #EQ. Actually I use this EQ the most these days. It does color the sound somewhat, I believe it tries to be “analog” – it works well for anything that is well-recorded.

Left: #AvaLegacyQ by #Harrison. I perceive it as something like the channel strip EQ but with even more character and of course with full versatility. I basically have quit using it, mostly because the UI was crashing Ardour sometimes. It still is sluggish in Mixbus, the UI. Harrison have discontinued the AVA series for Linux.

#Recording on #Linux, or hearing the flies fart on the wall.

I'm a bit shocked. I had been using #Harrison #MultibandCompressor #XTMC for years. Only to find a few moments ago that in certain cases, it can introduce undesired distortion.

I recorded some more piano and there it was, with the second band going into compression, very slightly, but just a little too much for my ears for this project.

For the Mandala Movie Album recently released, which is more or less Rock Music in terms of sound, this doesn't matter at all. But for this very piano solo recording… and I am afraid, for another one my wife played live on a grand piano, too.

So I tried to replicate the compression with #LinuxStudioPlugins' Stereo #Multiband #Compressor… and there's no distortion whatsoever. Yet, multiband compression is really hard to tune in / to analyse by ear… and the Harrison model just was very easy to use, while the #LSP one has too many knobs for my taste.

Of course, sc normal people won't hear anything of this at all.
